Arsenal slipped to a draw against Burnley in the last round and lost to Manchester City with a clean goal at the start of the year, adding to a streak of negative results in other leagues before securing their first win of the year against Wolverhampton.
Brazilian defender Gabriel Magalhaes scored the only goal of the match (25) and worked with his teammates to protect Arsenal’s goal after his compatriot Gabriel Martinelli (69) was sent off with a second yellow card.
Arsenal jumped to fifth place with 39 points, beating Manchester United on goal difference, while the loser’s tally stood at 34 points in eighth place.
