Arsenal said on Tuesday that they had signed Fabio Vieira, a midfielder for Porto, to a long-term deal for a reported fee of £34 million ($42 million), plus add-ons.
The 22-year-old came up through the Portuguese team’s youth program and played in 27 games as the team won the Primeira Liga last year.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said: “I am very excited that we have identified and signed such a special talent.
“Fabio is a very creative player who will add a lot of skill and variety to the way we attack.”
Arsenal has already bought Marquinos, a young player from Sao Paulo, to add to their team. However, Vieira is expected to join the first team right away. Matt Turner, a keeper from the United States, has also joined the Gunners.
Last season, the skilled player made 39 appearances for Porto and scored seven goals, and set up 14 others.
“Fabio is a special player who is good with the ball in the last third of the field,” said Edu, who is in charge of Arsenal’s technical side.
“We’re all excited to work with him and see what he brings to Arsenal in the future.
“We’ll keep working hard and look forward to getting this transfer window over with as quickly as possible.”
“This is a big step in my career,” Vieira said on the website for Arsenal’s team.
“It moved along very quickly. It was something I was interested in. I really liked getting to know the people at the club. I love it here, and I’m here to do my best for the team.
“I’m an attacking player who looks for space between the lines so I can score goals or set up goals to finish off moves.
“I think those are the main things Arsenal fans can look forward to from me.”
