Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s journey with Gabon in the 2021 African Cup of Nations ended with a lack of full recovery from the Covid virus.
Aubameyang will return to his English club Arsenal after being allowed to leave the African Cup of Nations in Cameroon to complete his recovery from Covid-19. Mario Lemina will also return to his French club Nice, having missed Gabon’s first two matches .
“Due to the medical concerns of Pierre-Emerick and Mario, we have taken consensus with the doctor, the president of the federation, and the players, the wise decision to return them to their clubs to take care of them.” Gabon coach Patrice Novo told a press conference in Yaoundé. “The two players tested positive on The 6th of this month, four days before Gabon’s first African Cup of Nations match against Comoros (1-0). It was negative before the second match (1-1 against Ghana) on Friday, but they again missed out on the repercussions of contracting the virus. The Gabonese Football Federation announced the absence of players from the match “because medical examinations showed heart problems”.
