Axel Witsel joins Atletico Madrid
Axel Witsel, a veteran Belgian midfielder, has joined Atletico Madrid on a free transfer from Borussia Dortmund, according to the Spanish La Liga club.
After four years in the Bundesliga, the 33-year-old Belgian international has signed a contract extension until June 30, 2023.
Witsel “is a new Atletico Madrid player after the agreement struck between our club and the Belgian footballer, who contracts for one season,” according to the club.
“With almost 600 official matches under his belt, our new midfielder will offer a wealth of experience.”
The announcement backs up a move proposed by club president Enrique Cerezo on June 27.
Witsel joins Atletico to replace Mexican Hector Herrera and will play with fellow Belgian international Yannick Carrasco.
Witsel began his career at Standard Liege in 2006 and has since played for Benfica, Zenit Saint Petersburg, and Tianjin Tianhai in China before joining Dortmund in 2018.
He appeared in 40 games and scored two goals last season.
He has also represented Belgium in two World Cups (2014 and 2018) as well as two European Championships (2016 and 2020).
