“Barcelona and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang have reached an agreement for the player to join the club after the striker ended his contract with Arsenal,” the Catalan club said in a statement, adding that “the player will sign a contract until June 2025 with the option to approve his departure on June 30, 2023, with the penalty clause for his purchase of 100 million euros”.
The official announcement of the 32-year-old’s signing comes after the closure of the winter transfer window on Monday night because he is freed from his contract with Arsenal, who announced on Tuesday the dissolution of his association with Gabonese international.
The former captain of the London club was seen taking part in training with Barcelona posted on social media on Tuesday. Aubameyang arrived in Spain on Monday ahead of the closing of the winter transfer window, but Barcelona did not announce any deal before the deadline until his release was formally resolved.
Aubameyang has been out of Arsenal’s reckoning with his Spanish coach Mikel Arteta, who has stripped the Gabonese of the captaincy and has been out of the squad since mid-December for disciplinary reasons.
According to reports, Aubameyang was one of the highest-paid players in the English league with a weekly salary of 250 thousand pounds (330 thousand dollars).
Aubameyang is believed to have agreed to reduce his salary with Arsenal in order to facilitate his move to coach Xavi Hernandez’s team, which aims to lead the team to one of the qualifying places for next season’s Champions League, which is why he also included Manchester City winger Ferran Torres for 55 million euros and then borrowed another Spaniard Adama Traore from Wolverhampton.
Barcelona are currently in fifth place, one point behind last-place fourth in the Champions League, with Sunday’s Champions League, rivals Atletico Madrid.
