Real Betis was held to a 0-0 draw against Getafe in the Spanish league on Monday, squandering another opportunity to build momentum in the race for a place in the Champions League.
Manuel Pellegrini’s side won the Copa del Rey last week, but they were coming off a 1-0 home defeat to Elche and a scoreless draw at Real Sociedad in the league.
With four rounds remaining, the Seville club’s losing skid prevented it from climbing into the top four. It is in the fifth position, three points behind fourth-placed Atlético and six points ahead of third-placed city rival Sevilla.
Betis hasn’t competed in the Champions League since 2005 when they were eliminated in the group stage.
The Copa del Rey win has already earned Betis a place in the Europa League for the second season in a row.
Getafe, which had lost its previous three league games, is now 15th in the table, five points above the relegation zone.
Because of the Copa championship, Getafe’s players formed a guard of honor for the Betis team before kickoff.
