Cristiano Ronaldo’s family has expressed gratitude to Liverpool supporters for their support following the 4-0 victory against Manchester United at Anfield.
Ronaldo was absent from United’s lineup after revealing the death of one of his fiancée Georgina Rodriguez’s twin infants on Monday night.
Since then, there has been a worldwide outpouring of passion and support for Ronaldo, and that feeling was on show on Merseyside when fans from both Liverpool and Manchester United rose up and cheered in the seventh minute of the game, recalling Ronaldo’s legendary jersey number.
A resounding performance of Liverpool’s hymn “You’ll Never Walk Alone” rang out around the stadium.
Elma Ronaldo, Ronaldo’s sister, acknowledged the Liverpool fans’ kindness on social media “Thank you very much, Liverpool. “We will never forget what you did today,” added elder sister, Katia, adding that the support extended “far beyond football.”
Earlier in the day, Ronaldo’s mother, Dolores, referenced a Bible verse in Portuguese that read: “Put your trust in the Lord with all your heart, and don’t rely on your own wisdom. Recognize Him in all your ways, and He will lead your steps.”
Ronaldo was seen leaving Carrington’s training field on Wednesday, but there is no word on when he will return to play for United.
Before the Liverpool loss, interim manager Ralf Rangnick declared that everyone at the club was “behind” Ronaldo and that everyone’s thoughts were with the Portuguese superstar and his family.
