Manchester City sealed the top of the English Premier League for week 22, beating Chelsea (1-0) on Saturday at the Etihad Stadium.
City’s only goal of the game was scored by Belgian Kevin de Bruyne in the 70th minute. Spanish coach Pep Guardiola’s team widened the with chasing Chelsea to 13 points. City now have 56 points as Chelsea with 43. It is true that Chelsea defeated Man City last season in the Champions League final, but the ambition of German coach Thomas Tuchel may be limited to solutions behind City in the standings and qualifying for the Champions League.
Since Tuchel took over Chelsea, four of City’s five matches have ended 1-0, and this confrontation has not been taken off the base. City dominated the match but did not succeed in cracking Chelsea’s defence, with the absence of Senegalese goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, who participated in the African Cup of Nations.
City’s only chance before the break came from a Chelsea defensive error. Croatian midfielder Mateo Kovacic bounced back from De Bruyne to Jack Grealish but wasted it infront of the Kepa the goalkeeper.Chelsea’s Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku, on the other hand, responded the same, with Brazilian goalkeeper Ederson preventing him from leaving a big mark in the game.
With a magical touch Maestro De Bruyne, with a pass from Portuguese Joao Cancel, fired a powerful curling shot into Kepa’s far left corner after a beautiful individual effort (70). Chelsea did not succeed in responding to De Bruyne’s goal to get out of the game with a draw. Chelsea have formed, since Tuchel took over the technical management, a tough opponent for Manchester City, where the team succeeded in achieving three victories last season against Pep Guardiola’s squad, including the Champions League final.
