Galatasaray ready for the new season by signing Mertens and Torreira

Uruguay midfielder Lucas Torreira has signed a four-year deal with Turkish Super Lig club Galatasaray, the clubs announced on Monday.

There were no financial specifics provided, although the move is estimated to be valued at about £5 million ($6.04 million).

“I’m really delighted with the choice I took; it was well-thought out,” Torreira, 26, told the club’s TV.

“I’m excited to go on this new journey.”

“The most essential thing is to try to get acquainted with the city, as well as the club and my teammates.” “I’m eager to begin training.”

Torreira joined Arsenal from Sampdoria in July 2018 and has made over 90 Premier League appearances for the club.

He spent the previous two seasons on loan, first with Atletico Madrid, where he helped them win the 2020-21 LaLiga championship, and then at Fiorentina when he returned to Serie A.

Galatasaray also announced the signing of Belgium forward Dries Mertens until 2023 on Monday.

After nine years at Napoli, where he became the club’s all-time leading scorer with 148 goals in all competitions, the 35-year-old has joined the Turkish side on a free transfer.
