Getafe sign Madrid star Mayoral
Borja Mayoral, the Real Madrid forward, has joined Getafe, the LaLiga clubs confirmed on Monday.
The 25-year-old Madrid youth product, who scored six goals in 18 appearances on loan at Getafe last season, has agreed to a five-year contract with his new club and will be presented on Thursday.
“Borja Mayoral joined our academy in 2007 and has been with Real Madrid ever since, winning a Champions League, a Club World Cup, a UEFA Super Cup, and a Spanish Supercopa,” Real Madrid said in a statement. “Real Madrid wishes him and his family the best of luck in this new chapter of their lives.”
A string of loan moves followed, first to Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga and then to Levante in LaLiga, before a two-year contract with Roma in 2020.
The Spain youth international scored 10 goals in his first season in Serie A, but fell out of favor with the arrival of Jose Mourinho as manager.
He left Roma in January to join Getafe on loan and made an immediate impact, scoring six goals to help them secure LaLiga survival and a 15th-place finish under coach Quique Sanchez Flores.
Mayoral was an unused substitute in Real Madrid’s 2-0 victory over Juventus in Los Angeles on Saturday, the final match of their US tour.
His departure leaves Madrid’s first team squad with only Karim Benzema, Mariano Diaz, and youngster Juan Latasa as recognized center forwards.
