Inter Milan beat Empoli 4-2 at home on Friday, keeping their Serie A championship chances alive and temporarily topping the standings thanks to two goals from striker Lautaro Martinez.
The result moved Inter one point ahead of AC Milan, who can reclaim the first position with a win against ninth-placed Verona on Sunday in their campaign for their first Scudetto since 2011. Empoli is still 14th with 37 points.
Inter goalkeeper Samir Handanovic was stunned in the fifth minute when attacker Andrea Pinamonti latched on to a wonderful low cross from Szymon Zurkowski, scoring his 13th goal of the season.
In the 28th minute, Empoli increased their lead when defender Riccardo Fiamozzi fired a long ball into the area, where Kristjan Asllani rifled it past Handanovic, who came out to stop him.
However, Inter, who had two penalties overturned by VAR, equalized in the 40th minute when Empoli defender Simone Romagnoli scored an own goal.
Martinez leveled just before the interval for his 18th league goal of the season, and he added his second in the 64th minute, firing a rebound past the keeper to put the hosts ahead before Alexis Sanchez clinched the three points in injury time.
