Lazio 1-2 AC Milan: Tonali’s late goal puts the visitors back in top

AC Milan won a critical 2-1 comeback victory against Lazio on Sunday thanks to a thrilling last-gasp goal from midfielder Sandro Tonali, lifting Stefano Pioli’s team back to the top of the Serie A rankings.

Champions Inter Milan moved to the top of the standings with a dominant 3-1 win over AS Roma on Saturday, their third league victory in a row, putting pressure on Milan to react in a tricky-looking trip to Rome to face the unpredictable Lazio.

They were quickly behind as Italy striker Ciro Immobile tucked home in the fourth minute to give the hosts the lead.

Milan had many opportunities to equalize in the first half, unleashing 12 shots on Lazio’s goal, but none of them were successful.

After the half, the visitors continued pushing, and the pressure paid off when French striker Olivier Giroud equalized in the 50th minute.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic came off the bench in quest of a winner, and the Swede turned provider for Tonali right at the end, sparking wild celebrations among Milan players and staff.

By the end of the season, this might be a vital triumph if Milan wins their first Scudetto since 2011, with Pioli’s team currently two points ahead of second-placed Inter, who have a game in hand. Lazio remains seventh with 56 points.
