Leicester City beat Liverpool 1-0 on Tuesday in the 20th stage of the English Premier League.
Ademola Lookman scored Leicester’s winning goal in the 59th minute. Leicester increased their tally to 25 points in 9th place while Liverpool’s tally was frozen at 41 points in 2nd place. Liverpool’s loss comes before Sunday’s trip to Chelsea’s stadium, and then to face the other London team Arsenal on Thursday.
Liverpool pressed from the start, resulting in a penalty snatched by Egyptian Mohamed Salah from Nigerian Wilfried Ndidi, but the Pharaoh collided with the brilliance of Danish goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel, who denied him his 16th league goal of the season with the help of a crossbar that blocked the Egyptian’s follow-up. According to Opta statistics, this is only Salah’s second penalty lost in the Premier League and the first to go back to October 2017 against Huddersfield before he succeeded in 15 consecutive penalties.
Liverpool continued their advantage and threatened Schmeichel’s goal more than once, most notably a ball that the Danish removed from the goal line after slightly shifting from Jordan Henderson’s head following a cross from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (23) and another to Salah from a narrow-angle that Danish goalkeeper repelled it (32), to keep the draw until the end of the first half. At the start of the second half, Leicester surprised their hosts with a goal through substitute Ademola Lookman, who received the ball from Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall on the left, and placed it into the net (59). Liverpool were morally affected by this goal and seemed unable to break Leicester’s defensive organization.
