Juventus won a hard-fought 2-1 win against Venezia in Serie A on Sunday, securing Champions League football for next season thanks to a double from veteran defender Leonardo Bonucci.
The hosts got off to a fast start in Turin, with Luca Pellegrini crashing an attempt against the crossbar before Bonucci scored on his 35th birthday in the seventh minute.
Bottom club Venezia, who fired coach Paolo Zanetti in midweek, reacted brightly and came close to equalizing in the first half, but Thomas Henry’s header sailed just wide.
In the second half, the visitors continued coming and got the equalizer they deserved when Mattia Aramu arrowed a drive into the goal in the 71st minute, leaving the Juventus defenders squabbling among themselves.
With Juventus running out of ideas upfront, it was left to Bonucci to score from close range 14 minutes from time.
The win moved Juve within a point of third-placed Napoli and, more importantly, ten points ahead of fifth-placed Lazio. Venezia remains at the bottom of the table with 22 points, six points below the safety zone.
