Lionel Messi thinks that Karim Benzema should win the Ballon d’Or this year because he helped Real Madrid win another Champions League.
The Frenchman scored 15 goals in Europe this season—only Cristiano Ronaldo has scored more in the history of the competition. He also scored 27 goals in La Liga, helping Real win the league and the Champions League under Carlo Ancelotti.
Messi won the award for the seventh time in 2021. Many people thought Robert Lewandowski should have won, so this was a bit of a controversial choice. The striker for Bayern Munich had to settle for coming in second.
But Messi thinks that when the award is given out in October, there won’t be any debates like that. He says that Benzema has done enough to win the award for the first time.
Messi told TyC Sports, “There’s no question in my mind that Benzema should win the Ballon d’Or.”
“It’s clear that Benzema had a great year and ended up stepping up with the Champions League, where he was a key player in every game from the last 16 on.” I think there are no doubts this year.”
Messi had a tough first year at PSG. He only scored six goals in Ligue 1 and couldn’t help the team of stars win their first Champions League.
With less than 30 minutes left in the second leg, the French team was up 2-0 on aggregate against Real, but Benzema scored a hat-trick in 17 minutes to send PSG crashing out in dramatic fashion.
In the games that followed, many of the club’s fans booed the players, which Messi said was something he didn’t expect.
“It was new for me, it’s a different situation,” Messi said. “It had never happened to me in Barcelona.
“The situation of the people and the anger toward the players we had, the team we were, and the fact that another year went by without a Champions League title are both understandable.
“The thing with Real Madrid killed us. To me, to everyone else in the room, and to all of Paris.
He also said, “Real Madrid wasn’t the best team in this Champions League, but they beat everyone anyway. This doesn’t take away from their skills, and it doesn’t matter that they won the Champions League and are always there.
