Liverpool climbed to second place in the English Premier League after a 3-0 win over Brentford on Sunday in the 22nd round, taking advantage of Chelsea’s 1-0 loss to Manchester City on Saturday.
Liverpool increased their tally to 45 points, trailing by a margin of 11 points from Manchester City with a postponed game. Liverpool fell into the trap of a draw with Arsenal in the semi-finals of the English League Cup in midweek despite the team’s fight for 66 minutes with 10 players following the dismissal of Swiss midfielder Granit Xhaka. However, Liverpool had no difficulty in collecting the three points and maintaining their hope of winning the title against a team that hasn’t achieved any win away from home since the beginning of October
The home team dominated the game and Portuguese striker Diogo Jota almost opened the scoring but his header went over the crossbar. Right-back Trent Alexander Arnold hit a ball that passed out of the three woodwork before, also Spanish goalkeeper Alvaro Fernandes stepped in to save his goal from a certain goal by Dutch Virgil van Dijk. Liverpool scored the first goal with a header from Brazilian midfielder Fabinho (44). Oxlade-Chamberlain and Japanese substitute Takumi Minamino settled the score in Liverpool’s favor with two goals in the 69th and 77th minutes.
Leeds comeback with a great win over West Ham
Jack Harrison established himself as the star of Leeds’ match against hosts West Ham by scoring a hattrick to lead his team to a 3-2 win. Harrison’s goals came in the minutes 10, 37, and 60, while Jarod Bowen (34) and Pablo Fornals scored for West Ham.
With this result, the pressure was removed from Leeds coach Marcelo Bielsa because his team climbed to 15th place with 22 points. West Ham, on the other hand, have gone far from Chelsea and weakened their chances of a qualifying position in the Champions League next season, and frozen their tally at 37 points with Chelsea’s 43.
The North London derby between Tottenham and Arsenal was scheduled to take place, but the league decided to postpone it because a large number of players were infected with Coronavirus in addition to several physical injuries in their ranks.
