Louis van Gaal responds to Virgil van Dijk’s criticism of the Netherlands’ tactics.

During the Netherlands’ 4-2 triumph over Denmark in a recent international friendly, the central defense thought the national team was in the wrong shape. Van Gaal started his captain in a 3-4-1-2 configuration, rather than the aggressive 4-3-3 that Jurgen Klopp used at club level.

After being sacked from Old Trafford, Van Gaal returned to management in 2021 to take control of Oranje for the third time. However, according to statements from Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk, he and Van Dijk look to be at odds in the national team right now.

“Do I think it’s a good system?” According to Van Dijk. “Well, I’m still a fan of the 4-3-3 formation, but I’m not the national coach, and the national coach has a strong view on the subject.”

Van Gaal retorted, saying: “I’m aware of his taste; he’s always said it publicly. When I arrived, we were already having this discussion. The tactics are decided by the management.”

On Tuesday, Holland will put their formation to the test against Hansi Flick’s Germany, but they will face the consequences in the summer when the UEFA Nations League returns in preparation for the World Cup in November.
