After River Plate were eliminated from the Copa Libertadores, Luis Suarez revealed that he would not be joining them this summer.
90min reported last month that River were leading the fight to capture Suarez, who is available on a free transfer after his contract with Atletico Madrid expired.
Speaking to Ovacion, Suarez said that his transfer to River was almost complete, but their unexpected elimination from the Copa Libertadores has put a halt to River’s ambitions of completing a deal.
“I was really enthusiastic about the potential of moving to River to battle for the Copa Libertadores,” he added. “Winning a cup in South America was a goal of mine.” That likelihood has decreased since River has been gone.
“I proclaimed a month and a half ago that I was not leaving Europe, but River urged so strongly that I started to contemplate it, and there was a chance.” You will think about everything you say when the time comes. You’re overjoyed that they adore you so much. Players need affection. River were handing it over to me.”
Suarez has already piqued the curiosity of former Liverpool teammate Steven Gerrard at Aston Villa.
