Lyon, seeking to be among the top three to ensure participation in next season’s Champions League competition, fell into a disappointing draw against hosts Lens 1-1 on Saturday in difficult weather conditions in the 25th round of the French Ligue 1.
Lens was the starter through Jonathan Clauss in the 13th minute, and Lyon equalized one minute before half-time through Zimbabwe’s Tino Kadewere.
Lyon had just one point to temporarily lift them to 5th place with 38 points, one point ahead of former partners Rennes and Monaco, who play on Sunday with Troyes and Bordeaux respectively, and above Lens, who moved up to 8th place temporarily.
It is Lyon’s first draw in their last six games in which they have won four and came against a side struggling to book a continental card.
Lyon are four points behind third-placed Nice, who plays on Sunday with Angers.
