Manchester United’s shortlist of managerial candidates should include Roberto Mancini.
Former Premier League striker Darren Bent believes the club would benefit from the appointment of the serial winner.
United are currently looking for a successor to interim manager Ralf Rangnick, who will take over in the summer when the German’s contract expires.
Mauricio Pochettino of PSG and Erik ten Hag of Ajax are the frontrunners for the job, but Bent believes Mancini should be considered.
After a shock 1-0 defeat to North Macedonia, Italy failed to qualify for this year’s World Cup, and the former Manchester City manager could soon find himself without a job.
Mancini only won the Euro 2020 title with his country last summer, but he also has three Serie A titles to his name with Inter Milan, as well as a Premier League title with Manchester City.
Fans may be put off by Bent’s previous experience managing United’s archrivals, but he believes it will be exactly what the Red Devils require to return to the top of world football.
‘He has shown he can do it in this country, and I believe it is crucial that he has Premier League experience,’ Bent said on talkSPORT.
‘He went on to win a major trophy with Italy in the Euros, so his pedigree in terms of winning things is undeniable.’
‘If you’re looking for a winner, I suppose the counter argument is that people will say Jose [Mourinho] was a winner who had a bad ending.’
‘While he won trophies for United, many would argue that he left the club in a bad state.’
‘It would be a big deal for him to go to United after winning Manchester City’s first Premier League title.’
‘However, we have seen managers do this in the past.’
