Man Utd bids €45 million for Antony, but Ajax are likely to ask for more

Reports say that Man Utd has made an offer for Ajax winger Antony, but the Eredivisie team is likely to ask for more.

This season, the winger was in great shape for the Dutch club. He helped Ajax win the Eredivisie by scoring 12 goals and setting up 8 others in 33 games.

Antony moved to Ajax from Sao Paulo in Brazil in 2020 in a deal that could be worth up to £18.2 million. In his two years in the Netherlands, he has played 79 games and scored 22 goals.

Liverpool and Newcastle have both been mentioned as possible destinations for Antony, but Man Utd have been talked about more because Erik ten Hag used to play for Ajax.

And a Brazilian blogger, Jorge Nicola, told The Metro that the Red Devils have made their first offer of €45 million for Antony.

Antony is thought to be Ten Hag’s first-choice target as he tries to strengthen his front line. Ajax hasn’t responded to their first offer yet, though.

But the report says that the Dutch giants are likely to ask Man Utd for more money because Brazil international is an important part of their starting XI.

Another report from earlier this week said that Antony’s agents had gone to Europe “to speed up and maybe even close the deal between the player and the Manchester club.”

Erik Ten Hag

Antony sent Ten Hag a video message after he left for Man Utd last month. He said, “I want to wish you the best at your new club. I also want to say thanks for all you taught me. I’m thankful for all the chances and things I learn every day.

“Know that I’ll be there for you whenever you need me.”

Kevin Campbell, a former striker for Arsenal, says that Ten Hag will know “Antony can make the step-up” before a possible transfer.

Campbell told Football Insider, “You have to think about how big of a jump it is from the Eredivisie to the Premier League.”

“But Ten Hag likes to stick to what works, so he’ll want to work with players who are familiar with his system. Antony has been playing very well for Ajax lately, in my opinion. He is a great player.

“I don’t think that step up will scare Ten Hag at all because he knows Antony can do it. It will be interesting to see what happens with him, but he is a top player.”
