Manchester United lost to Wolverhampton 1-0 on Monday in the 21st stage of the English Premier League.
Joao Moutinho scored the only goal in the 82nd minute. Wolverhampton finished with 28 points in eighth place, while the Red Devils were frozen at 31 and are seventh on the Premier League table. According to Opta before this match, Wolves have not won in their last 10 away games against Manchester United since their 1-0 win in February 1980, failing to score in seven of these matches and scoring only three goals.
Wolverhampton played a big game with 15 shots in the first half, the highest number of shots ever made (since 2003-2004) recorded by the visitors at Old Trafford in the first 45 minutes of a Premier League match. The first half saw superiority for the guests, amid the confusion of Manchester players, with no positive effect. The start of the second half did not see an improvement in performance by United, and Wolverhampton imposed their rhythm in the first quarter, without any serious chance except for an attempt by Nelson Simedo (59).
Red Devils coach Ralph Rangnik introduced Portuguese Bruno Fernandes, who missed the previous match against Burnley (3-1) due to suspension. Indeed, Fernandes converted a pass from Serbian Nemanja Matic to hit the crossbar in the 67th minute. The referee canceled out a header by Cristiano Ronaldo for an offside in the 68th minute. The German coach tried to snatch the game by entering Marcus Rashford in place of Jaydon Sancho.
But that was not in United’s favor when in the 82nd minute, Adama Traore crossed a ball cut by United’s defence, reaching Moutinho, who shot it into the net to the right of Spanish goalkeeper De Gea. The Red Devils tried to equalize in the last minutes remaining with no benefits.
