Athletic Bilbao will be looking for a new head coach for next season after Marcelino announced his departure.
On January 3, 2021, Marcelino took over as president of the Basque club. Later that month, he led Athletic to the Supercopa de Espana victory.
Athletic also reached the final of the 2021-22 event but lost to Real Madrid, while Marcelino supervised two Copa del Rey final losses – one of which was postponed from the 2019-20 season owing to the coronavirus epidemic.
Marcelino’s team reached the Copa del Rey semi-finals this season, defeating both Barcelona and Real Madrid, however they were defeated in the final over two legs by Valencia, who were defeated by Real Betis.
The contract of the 56-year-old will not be extended when it ends at the end of June. He led Athletic to eighth place in LaLiga in the 2021-22 season, after finishing 10th the previous season.
Marcelino managed 59 league games, winning 19 (32.2%) and losing 17, with his club scoring 70 goals and conceding 59, averaging 1.36 points per game.
“We think the moment has come to stand aside and put an end to a great narrative,” Marcelino said during a press conference on Tuesday. We are honored to have had the opportunity to coach Athletic Club.
“Thank you to everyone and best wishes for your future success.” This is not a farewell. You will live on in our hearts forever. Always.
“I want to thank the fans from the bottom of my heart. We were orphaned when the epidemic struck. Then I discovered what it really takes to be Athletic’s coach at San Mames.
“There have been some amazing evenings and memorable memories for us.”
Athletic, who were defeated 1-0 by Sevilla in their last game of the season, have been connected with Mauricio Pochettino should the former Tottenham Hotspur manager be fired by Paris Saint-Germain.
