Marseille returned to the winning track and climbed to second place on goal difference from Nice with a big away win over Brest 4-1 on Sunday in the 28th round of the French Ligue 1.
Marseille’s goals were scored by Brazilian Gerson Santos (3), Polish Arkadiusz Milik (63), Moroccan Amin Harit (71), and Turkish Cengiz Under (90+2), against a goal by Irvin Cardona (90+1).
Marseille raised their tally to 50 points in second place with Nice, who will face them next Sunday at the Velodrome in a fiery encounter.
Rennais win big over Lyon
Rennais secured their fourth successive win with a big away victory over Lyon 4-2 on Sunday in the same round.
Lyon were rocked by three first-half goals from Benjamin Bourigeaud (11), Baptiste Santamaria (13), and Lovro Majer (45+1). At the start of the second half, Martin Terrier (49)scored the fourth goal in Antony Lopes’s net, before a gift from Malian Hamari Traore (59 own goal) and Moussa Dembele (82 from the penalty spot) reduced the score and ended Lyon with 41 points in tenth place.
After three straight draws, Strasbourg returned to the winning track with a superb goal from Ghana’s Alexander Djiku with an acrobatic shot in the 24th minute, boosting Strasbourg’s Champions League dream.
Lens wasted two important points for his chances of continental participation by a negative draw against host Metz, and Lorient left the relegation zone but by a point against Saint-Etienne, beating host and rival Clermont 2-0, while Reims beat host Angers 1-0.
