The German club is one of the largest in Europe, and its financial prowess allows them to add a few superstars in each transfer window. Bayern Munich is attempting to bolster its defense by luring Matthijs de Light away from Juventus as they did with Sadio Mane this summer.
According to Fabrizio Romano, FC Bayern and Juventus have struck a verbal deal for the former Ajax player. The journalist confirms that the financial proposal has been approved and that the move should be disclosed this week in order to incorporate him in the preseason as soon as feasible.
FC Bayern offered €80 million for Matthijs de Light’s services, which Juventus accepted. With the departure of Niklas Sule to Borussia Dortmund, the 2019-20 Champions League champions needed a defender and got one in the 22-year-old.
This is the second time that a club has paid more than €80 million for Matthijs de Ligt. Juventus, his previous club, offered €85,5 million to bring the Dutch defender from Ajax to Italy in 2019, but he did not have the greatest experience in Turin, and when an offer came in, the Vecchia Signora did not hesitate to accept it.
Manchester United and FC Bayern both feature twice in the top-10 list of most expensive defenders of all time. The Red Devils top this list because of Harry McGuire’s signing from Leicester City in 2019, for which they paid €87 million.
Manchester City, another Premier League club, is recognized as one of the teams that invests the most in defenders. They paid a total of €188.6 million on three center-backs (Ruben Dias, Aymeric Laporte, and John Stones). Bayern Munich is now only €160 million behind the Citizens, having bought Lucas Hernandez from Atletico Madrid in 2019 for the same fee as Matthijs de Ligt this summer.
