Monaco appoint Belgian Clement as first-team coach

Monaco announced on Monday the appointment of Belgian Philippe Clement as their new coach, replacing Croatian Niko Kovac.

Kovac, the former Bayern Munich coach who took over in July 2020, was officially dismissed on Saturday after being informed of the decision on Thursday. Monaco finished third last season but were eliminated from the Champions League preliminary round and currently rank sixth in the French league standings, by a margin of 17 points from Paris Saint Germain leader.

Clement, 47, will take over Monaco’s coaching staff on a contract that runs until June 2024, after coaching Club Brugge and leading them to the 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 league titles.
