Dutch League champions Ajax Amsterdam announced on Sunday that their former star Mark Overmars has resigned as the club’s sporting director after sending “a series of inappropriate messages” to some of his female colleagues.
Overmars, 48, who won the Champions League with Ajax in 1995, expressed his “shame”, apologizing and admitting he had “crossed the line”, according to a club statement, which referred to messages he had sent to “several women” over a period.
The club’s chairman, Len Mayard, moaned the”tragic and devastating situation of the women who have had to manage this behavior”.
He stressed that Overmars was” probably the best football manager Ajax have ever collaborated with “but”continuing was not an option”. Overmars has been sporting director since 2012 and has taken some responsibility for the recent successes of Ajax Amsterdam, especially his remarkable brilliance in the prestigious continental competition in 2019 (reached the semi-finals) and reached the final of the Europa League competition “Europa League” in 2017.
Overmars recently extended his contract until 2026, at a time when Ajax are living another near-perfect season, with 5 points ahead of rivals Eindhoven and reaching the Champions League final where they will meet Benfica.
