PSG trigger option to buy Nuno Mendes for €40m

As expected, Paris Saint-Germain took advantage of an option to buy in Nuno Mendes’ loan deal and bought the left-back from Sporting CP for about £34 million.

The 19-year-old first joined PSG on loan on the last day of the transfer window last summer. He went on to make 37 appearances in all competitions as Mauricio Pochettino’s team won Ligue 1 again and lost to Real Madrid in the Champions League.

That first deal included a €7m loan fee, and now Les Parisiens have activated a €40m (£34m) option to buy. Mendes has signed a contract with Les Parisiens until 2026 when he will still be 23 years old.

PSG said in a statement: “Nuno Mendes is now a permanent member of the Paris Saint-Germain team. The left-back for Portugal is now signed to the club in Paris until June 30, 2026.”

The structure of the deal is the same as the one that let the champions of Ligue 1 sign Danilo Pereira for good last summer after he had been on loan from Sporting’s rivals in Liga NOS, Porto.

Mendes was named the best left-back in Ligue 1 despite being young. He was nominated for the Young Player of the Season award.

PSG will have a busy summer again as they try to build their team around Kylian Mbappe, who turned down Real Madrid to sign a new three-year deal at Parc des Princes. Behind the scenes, the futures of manager Mauricio Pochettino and sporting director Leonardo are uncertain.
