Real Madrid moves closer to the title with a victory in Osasuna; Granada holds Atletico to a tie

Real Madrid moved a step closer to winning La Liga this season with a 3-1 victory against Osasuna on Wednesday night.

The game will most likely be remembered for Osasuna goalkeeper Sergio Herrera saving two penalties from Karim Benzema, but it was not enough to stop Real Madrid, who opened the scoring in the 12th minute when David Alaba scored from close range.

Ante Budimir equalized a minute later, thanks to superb work from Chimmy Avila, but Marcos Asensio restored Madrid’s advantage on the stroke of halftime after Herrera had saved Dani Ceballos’ attempt.

Madrid were granted two penalties in the second half following fouls on Rodrygo, but Herrera saved both of them, according to Xinhua, with Lucas Vazquez securing the three points deep into injury time.

Atletico Madrid climbed into the second position after a 0-0 draw at home against Granada, who were led by Aitor Karanka for the first time.

Atletico had several opportunities but only managed one shot on goal during the game. With draws in their respective matches on Thursday, Barcelona and Sevilla will leapfrog Atletico, while Granada’s point will not be enough to hoist them out of the bottom three.

Getafe moved a step closer to a repeat season in the top flight with a 2-0 victory away to Celta Vigo, courtesy of two goals from Borja Mayoral in the 23rd and 51st minutes of the game.

Villarreal defeated Valencia 2-0 at home, while Betis’ top-four aspirations were dashed by a 1-0 loss at home to Elche, who have just about ensured their safety in the top level for another season.

Finally, Mallorca won 2-1 at home against Alaves, who remain at the bottom of the standings, six points from safety.
