Real Madrid reached the quarter-finals of the Copa del Rey with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over hosts Elche after extension to extra time, while Barcelona were eliminated by Athletic Bilbao on Thursday night.
Real Madrid found it very difficult to find a crack in the hosts’ defense throughout the original time and found themselves trailing by a goal in the first half of extra time scored by Gonzalo Verdu from a free-kick (103) caused by Brazilian Marcelo who was sent off (102). Real Madrid bounced back after the goal and managed to turn the table with two goals by Isco and Belgian Eden Hazard in the 108th and 115th minutes.
Barcelona with another huge blow
For its part, Barcelona failed to reach the quarter-finals by losing to Athletic Bilbao (2-3) after reaching extra time.
Athletic Bilbao opened the score early with a nice goal by captain Iker Muniain (2), but Barcelona’s new signing Ferran Torres scored his first goal with a wonderful shot in the far corner (20). Athletic were brave enough during the match and caused a lot of trouble for Barcelona. Inigo Martinez scored Atheltic’s second goal in a deadly time after a corner kick that caused confusion in the area.
All thought the match will end 2-1 but Pedri Gonzalez scored a powerful shot with a beautiful assist from Dani Alves in the last minute of added time (90+3) to extend the match into extra time. Later in minute 105, Jordi Alba offered Athletic Bilbao a huge favor by giving them a penalty after the ball hit his hand inside the area. Captain Iker Munian stepped up for it and placed it in the net to give Athletic the spot in the quarter-finals.
