Real Madrid with a tough win over Granada

Real Madrid moved far in the top of the Spanish La Liga with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Granada on Sunday.

Marco Asensio’s only goal for Madrid’s team came from a brilliant 25-meter shot that shook the net of Portuguese goalkeeper Luis Maximiano in the 74th minute, marking his sixth league goal of the season.

Real Madrid raised their first-place tally to 53 points, 6 points ahead of their immediate pursuer Sevilla, who fell to a goalless draw against Osasuna on Saturday.

Sevilla went into the game after an exit from the Copa Del Rey by neighbors Real Betis (1-2) and two draws in the last two stages against Valencia (1-1) and Celta Vigo (2-2). Croatia’s Ivan Rakitic wasted a penalty in the final moments of the match (90+3) to force a draw.

By this point, coach Lopetegui’s team raised their tally to 47 points in second place, while Osasuna, on the other hand, raised his score to 29 points in twelfth place.

Elche and Real Mallorca scored two very important wins in their survival struggle, at the expense of two teams competing to avoid relegation, Deportivo Alaves, and Cadiz, with 3-1 and 2-1 respectively.

Rayo Vallecano fell to host Celta Vigo with two clean goals.

Athletic Bilbao, thrilled after eliminating Real Madrid from the Cup, continued their strong results in the domestic league, with a 2-1 win over Espanyol in the twenty-third round.
