The 2022-2023 UEFA Champions League kick-off date

As one season of the UEFA Champions League comes to a close, attention turns to the next. In 2021-22, only one club will have already won the championship, while all the others have been trying to do so. Teams that play in the Champions League every year will have second chances in just a few months.

In 2022-23, the UEFA Champions League will be in its 68th season. This will be the 31st season since the name was changed from the European Champion Clubs’ Cup to its current name, the UEFA Champions League.

In the new UCL season, there are 78 teams from 53 of the 55 countries that are part of UEFA. The only exceptions are teams from Russia, which aren’t allowed to play, and Liechtenstein, which doesn’t have its own league.

When does the 2022-2023 UEFA Champions League start?

Some teams will start trying to get into the UEFA Champions League as early as June 21, 2022, when the semi-finals and final of the preliminary qualifying stages are played.

Before the group round starts at the beginning of September, there will be three more rounds of two-leg qualifications in July and August. Because of the FIFA World Cup in Qatar, the Group Stage of the Champions League, which starts on September 7, will last less than two months.

At the end of the year, the world cup Qatar 2022 takes place. The highest level of competition in Europe will then have a three-month break until the Knockout Round starts back up in mid-February. The Champions League final for 2022–23 will be held in Istanbul, Turkey, on June 10, which is two weeks later than usual.
