Ernesto Valverde will be Athletic Bilbao’s coach for the third time. He was named to the job on Thursday.
The 58-year-return old’s isn’t a surprise because the club’s new president, Jon Uriarte, had already said that he was his top choice.
Valverde hasn’t had a team since he was fired as Barcelona’s coach in January 2020. During his time there, he helped the team win two league titles and a Copa del Rey.
Valverde played for Bilbao from 1990 to 1996 and then coached them from 2003 to 2006 and again from 2013 to 2017. With a 5-1 win over Barcelona in the 2015 Spanish Super Cup, he led them to their first trophy in more than 30 years.
Last season, Athletic finished eighth in La Liga and didn’t make it into the European competitions.
