AC Milan defeated relegation-threatened Genoa 2-0 on Friday, sending Stefano Pioli’s side back to the top of Serie A. Rafael Leao, and Junior Messias scored.
Inter Milan temporarily topped Serie A after a 3-1 victory over Spezia earlier on Friday, putting pressure on their main opponents to respond as Milan seeks to win the Scudetto for the first time since 2011.
Milan, who had not scored in their previous two league games, did not waste any time getting on the board in the San Siro, with stand-in full-back Pierre Kalulu picking out the ideal cross for Leao to volley in in the 11th minute.
But they went flat again in the second half, trying to get that crucial second goal while Genoa caused havoc on the other end.
Milan persisted, and it paid off when Brazilian midfielder Messias slammed home three minutes into time to seal the victory.
Milan moved to 71 points from 33 games, two ahead of Inter, who has a game in hand, after achieving their first win in three league encounters. Genoa is still in 19th place with 22 points, three points from safety.
